Habitat

Commonly grows on roadsides, disturbed ground, and lawns. It is commonly found in city parks and at higher elevations. Usually early and again later in the summer season into the fall.


Description

The Shaggy Mane is a fine edible mushroom. It must be cooked right away after it is picked otherwise it will turn to black ink very quickly. They are great fried in batter (rocky mountain calamari), or used in gravies and sauces. They do not store well in the refrigerator. This is a good mushroom for beginners as its very easy to identify. Deliquescing (liquefying to ink) with age.
