Grows on the ground, in the woods.
Reddish to brown cap, with yellow at the base of the stalk, grey gills. Edible but the skin should be removed. It's rather slimy and sure doesn't look very appetizing if you ask me. I think this is a very easy mushroom to identify. I have never actually eaten one because I usually find something better and more appealing.
Gomphidius subroseus is another similar mushroom that grows in Colorado. Both species are considered edible. The main difference is in the size and sometimes cap color. One is slimmer and the other can get somewhat larger.
It is somewhat common to find them along side of Suillus amabilis (lakei). It could be associated with Douglas Fir although I've found both under spruce as well.
